Education Working Group
The Syrian British Medical Society (SBMS) was founded on the 7th July 2007 by a group of British medical professionals of Syrian heritage. SBMS is a non-profit, non-political organization embracing all health care professionals of Syrian heritage, residing in the UK with their training and progression as well as to support Syrian healthcare professions in Syria and in the diaspora. Please see our About Us page for further information and for details on how to become a member.
The SBMS EWG is co-led by Dr Aula Abbara and Dr Hamaweh.
The aim of the working group is to:
- Provide support and training for Syrian doctors who are in the UK through delivering tailored sessions which support their entry into the UK health system.
- Provide mentorship and networking for Syrian doctors and non-physician health workers in the UK.
- Strengthen links with relevant UK organisations including GMC, BMA, RCP, RSM, Lincoln Doctors Project, HEE, NHSI and academic institutions.
- Support Telemedicine and Tele-education projects which support health worker education in Syria.
- Actively support and participate in R4HSSS’ health worker education projects in northern Syria.
In 2024, SBMS doctors and associates delivered a series of lectures covering infectious diseases, cardiology, general and specialist surgery e.g. plastics aimed at SBOMS (Syrian Board of Medical Specialities) residents. A program of feedback supported improvements to ensure the teaching is tailored towards the local needs. Some examples are below:
